CP4 on the 6.7 power stroke, is the disaster prevention kit worth it at 91k

i have replaced eleven CP4s on fleet trucks in six years. not nothing, not the plague either, that is out of about 140 trucks. every one of the eleven had a fuel problem first. water, gas in the tank, a hand running it dry on the pad and cranking it. the pump does not fail on clean diesel. what i do on my own truck: water separator drained every fuel up, filters at 10k instead of 20k, and the disaster kit, about 400 bucks and a saturday. the DCR swap is good work, but 3 grand on a 91k truck i would rather put toward the next truck. the kit does not stop the pump from failing. it stops the failure costing 9 thousand instead of 1,500.

put the kit on my 2020 last winter. two hours with the truck on ramps, the hardest part was the fuel line clips. i also ran a clear return line for a month so i could see if anything sparkly came through. nothing. and pull the drain on the water separator every time you fuel from a pad truck, not once a week, every time. i got half a cup of water out of mine after one fuel truck fill in august.

dispatcher, not a mechanic, but i see the invoices. three CP4 jobs across our trucks in two years and all three were trucks that fueled off the same vendor's truck. we changed fuel vendors in the spring. the shop said water in the fuel every time. so before anybody spends 3 grand, ask who fills your truck.

one more for the people who will find this on google. before you spend anything, run your VIN on ford.com under recalls and programs. we had two 2020s with a fuel system program on them that nobody in the office knew about until i looked.

cummins guy in a ford thread. the 2019 and 2020 6.7 cummins got the CP4 too, so the fuel advice goes for us. drained mine this week, a spoonful of water. every fill from now on.
