company wants me to fuel the generators and the light towers on two pads west of Carrizo instead of calling the fuel truck every other day. thinking a 100 gallon L shaped transfer tank in the bed of the 3500 with a 12 volt pump. i have heard 119 gallons is the line where you need placards and a hazmat endorsement, and i have also heard that is only for gasoline, not diesel. what is the actual rule, and what tank do yall run. i do not want the DOT guy at the scale on 83 finding something i did not know about.

diesel is a combustible, not a flammable, that is the whole trick. under 119 gallons in one container you are out of most of the hazmat rules for diesel. over 119 in a single tank and it becomes a bulk package and now you are into placards and paperwork. keep it at 100 or 110 and put a diesel label on the tank.
the 12 volt pump wants its own fused line to the battery, not the trailer plug. i learned that with a melted 7 pin on the side of 59.

wes has it. one more piece. if you are for hire and the tank plus the truck puts you over 10,001 lbs GVWR you are already a commercial vehicle regardless of what is in the tank, so the DOT number and the annual inspection matter more than the diesel does. 100 gallons is about 700 lbs plus the tank, nothing to a 3500, but count it.

ran a 98 gallon aluminum transfer flow on a 250 for three years. DOT legal tank with the baffles in it. the cheap steel tanks off the internet rust from the inside if you let them sit half full over the summer, water condenses in there and then you are pouring water into a 40 thousand dollar generator. get the aluminum one and keep it full.
and chain the nozzle up. i lost one on 59 and it bounced into a guy's grill.

ordered the 100 gallon aluminum L tank with the pump built into the top, about 1,900 delivered to the shop. the DOT certification sheet and the specs were on transferflow.com, which is more than the ebay tanks could show me. mounting it this weekend with the toolbox combo so i do not lose my toolbox.

filter it. the 12 volt pumps come with a screen, not a filter. a 10 micron spin on inline is 40 bucks and it saves the injectors on a light tower that already runs on whatever the last guy put in it. and if you ever put DEF anywhere near that tank throw the whole thing away. do not ask how i know.
